Has any parent not wanted to say something like this?

secondly, 'fine, fine, yes' in this context obviously means, 'I am not listening but the answer is no,'

Its scary how what our parents used to say comes out of our mouths. I used to hate it when mom wold say " You'll understand one day" I remember I used to make mental notes to remember what it was I was supposed to understand one day.

Of course she was right ....and I never did find those mental notes.

heh. What amuses me is that the quote is from a conversation between Rodney Mckay and Dr. Zelenka from Stargate: Atlantis.

"fine, fine, yes" could reach out and bite you one of these days (you said we could). So why not try "we'll see" which BB1 said meant "we'll wait until later to say no." He could have been right. LOL qp
