At the 2:00 hour, I decided last minute to go to Live Action/Anime vidpairs. This was really interesting. Often the song was cut differently between the two sides of the pair. All anime can be assumed to be NMF. (ETA: Playlist and VJ commentary)
Caffeine Encomium (William Tell Overture): Kodomo no Omocha/Kodocha -- I thought this worked perfectly matching the pacing of the action to the pacing of the clips, and the story was uncomplicated, which was necessary for me to connect to a foreign source set to an instrumental piece.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Abridged) (William Tell Overture): Buffy -- I wanted to be more impressed with the execution of this than I was. I don't have all the seasons memorized, and I got the impression that I was missing a lot of references for the lack.
Die Another Day: Heroes -- NMF, but it might soon be. This vid taught me that the right song will buy a LOT of points with me. I love this song so much, and I am so very sad when it is poorly vidded. That was not the case with this vid. I spent the whole thing giddy.
Die Another Day: Noir -- However, apparently the song will not buy enough points for an anime fandom with a complex plot. Visually beautiful, I just didn't connect.
Lord's Prayer (Vater Unser (Psalm 23 Club Mix)): X1999 -- Lovely imagery, but plot too complex for me too grasp beyond the occasional religious theme
Lord's Prayer: Battlestar Galactica -- This provoked thought for me -- partly because I couldn't decide which side was praying. Only one side is monotheistic, but neither is likely to "forgive those who sin against us."
Stress: Stargate Atlantis -- There is a section of this song that is largely useless, but it's a stone bitch to edit out. The vidders did the best they could, and it came out not too bad. What they left was perfect (and perfect length) for what they wanted to tell from canon. (Also, I now no longer feel the need to make this vid.)
Stress: Cowboy Bebop -- I hadn't read the vid blurb, so seeing such a wide variety of characters in a vid to a first-person singular song didn't make sense to me. The visuals did present "an overview of Spike's time on the Bebop and all the strange characters the crew has met," but I think a different song choice may have been better for the intent.
Into the Fire: Rarouni Kenshin (Samuri X) -- The version shown was accidentally not the version intended. The version shown divided the screen into quadrants with a central cutout (5th "quadrant") that varied in which of the other four it matched. Based on the blurb, I wonder if the central was supposed to be the final cohesive vid, but I didn't know that going in, so it seemed far busier than my eye can track.
Into the Fire: Doctor Who -- This is a vid I can't watch very often because it makes me cry Every Gorram Time. I like the framing device that sets off the before (together, happy) from the after (apart, not by choice), and the after includes the bitter, bittersweet farewell and I just can't make it through without sniffling.
Protège Moi: Supernatural -- OMG I loved this. This is another song that would cover a multitude of sins, but it didn't need to. Supernatural is my current DOC, and it's hard to make something that I won't love (or at least watch with the sound off). But the verse was in French, the closest thing I have to a second languange and I love how it sounds, and the chorus was simple and English (Protect me from what I want), in 3/4 time, with varying emphasis syllables set by note length, and just, holy crap. The only thing better would have been more.
Tsumibito no Kashou (Protège Moi): Fullmetal Alchemist -- I'd had just enough introduction to FMA on Thursday to get what the POV characters needed protection from, so I was able to enjoy the Much Longer Version of the song without being too confused.
After the VidPairs, we got to watch the Challenge Vids (ETA: Challenge and Auction playlist)
Only: Battlestar Galactica -- I didn't quite get this vid. The blurb is "what does it take before you're considered a person." Not being familiar with the song, I probably missed any additional insight that would have granted. Link
Quantum Theory: Children of Men -- (NMF) this was a more cheerful vid from that movie. I enjoyed it, but I'm glad I had seen the other Children of Men vid first so I wasn't completely confused by the premises. Link
Martina: Veronica Mars -- (NMF) short, succinct, and powerful. Out of the vids this weekend that referred in any way to violence against women, this was my favorite. The song is almost overwhelming, but I didn't feel like I missed out on critical points by not being riveted to the screen -- girl, night, danger of walking alone. Later re-watch with someone who knew the particulars of Veronica's story revealed the subtleties of the last few scenes.
Faithfully: Supernatural -- again, it's hard to do something in this fandom that I don't love. OTOH, I often don't appear to be as amused by humor vids that are internally consistent with respect to emotion as other people are. Objectively, I know that Dean/Impala is silly, but if the vidder does too good a job matching the mood of the visuals to the mood of the audio, there is no dissonance to the input and so I just take it as it stands alone. I like it, if for no other reason than Dean is Pretty, Especially When He's Angsting.
Well, Well, Well: Firefly, Serenity -- There a lot of questions left unanswered about Shepherd Book, and this vid reminded us of how much we both loved and hated that.
The Other Side: House MD -- Oh, Chase. Poor, owie Chase. I'll want to see this again, because there's a lot I think I missed, but it was a cool read on Chase's history as a former seminarian and his issues with God, his father, and House. ETA: Link
Hey Jude: Buffy -- I really, really need to watch this again. For a long time I thought the second person of the song (Jude) was Buffy being advised about Faith, and then at the bridge I thought "Whoa, Jude is Faith being advised about Buffy" but I wasn't quick enough on the re-read in my head. The rest of the song felt cohesive, and now I need to see it again.
Lastly (before Calls from the Public) was the Auction Vids. The blurbs are not really helping to stimulate my memory.
People Get Ready: Heroes -- Psychics are cool. I was kind of tired by this point, and the song was more soothing than energetic, but it cast another tally in favor of watching this series.
Falling for the First Time: Supernatural -- this made me giggle with delight quite a bit. The moods matched and I really enjoyed it.
Save Yourself: The Collector -- NMF. I remember liking it, but it apparently didn't record any pertinent data.
Tokyo Sling: Remix: Wei? Kreuz -- NMF. Visually pretty.
Tragedy: Buffy -- oh, Spike! This is the perfect example of dissonance between the mood of the music and the mood of the visuals striking me (and maybe everyone else) as having comedic effect. The credits set us up perfectly (The Bee Gees + Spike = Tragedy). This may have been the best possible final note for the weekend vid viewing.
So now,
butterfly,
blacksquirrel, and I are waiting for check out time.
ladysorka left last night. Media-share is going like mad. I'm not psychotic. Life is good.
Vividcon yay!
